The Owners Behind CityROCK
CityROCK exists because of a group of dedicated climbers who have shaped the South African climbing scene. Here’s who they are:
Robert Breyer – Trad Dad & Managing Director
Robert is the majority shareholder and a lifelong trad climber. He’s been a key player in CityROCK’s growth, ensuring it remains a stronghold for climbers in SA. When he’s not managing business decisions, he’s out placing gear and debating climbing ethics.
Charles Edelsten (Snort) – Climber & Bolter
Charles is one of SA’s most well-known climbers, with a long history of hard ascents. He’s also put up countless routes, ensuring climbers have solid, well-bolted lines to send. He’s known for his direct approach, both on and off the rock. Doctor by trade, climber by heart.
Trish Breyer – Gear Expert
Trish is responsible for establishing Mountain Mail Order (MMO) and the CityROCK gear shops. She’s also an experienced climber, often leading the way on multipitch routes.
Mike Behr – Gym & Crag Builder
Mike has been instrumental in building CityROCK’s facilities and bolting some of the country’s best crags, including Owning Tranquilitas. His work has helped shape SA’s climbing infrastructure.
Staff with shares
At CityROCK, we recognise that the success of our gyms isn’t just built by the owners, it’s built by the people who show up every day, go the extra mile, and live and breathe climbing culture. Some of our team members have been rewarded with shares as a reflection of their dedication, impact, and long-term commitment.

Cally Bishop – Operations & Leadership
Cally was awarded management shares for her role in the smooth running and growth of CityROCK. She has been a part of the journey from the opening of Johannesburg, Cape Town’s expansion from Observatory to Paarden Eiland, keeping the business afloat during the pandemic, and the building and opening of Pretoria.
Cally is the core of operations and marketing, tirelessly working behind the scenes to keep everything running seamlessly. She is known for her dedication, attention to detail, and unwavering commitment, always giving 110%. Her passion for CityROCK is infectious, and her hard work is a driving force behind the gyms running at full strength every day.
Tarryn MacLean - Long service
Tarryn was awarded long service shares in recognition of over 20 years of dedication to CityROCK. She has seen the gyms grow from the very beginning and has been part of every milestone along the way. Tarryn brings unmatched experience, perspective, and institutional knowledge, along with a contagious energy that keeps both staff and climbers motivated.
Her psych, passion, and commitment to excellence make her a role model within the CityROCK team. Even after two decades, she continues to push herself, inspire others, and contribute to the ongoing growth and success of the gyms. Tarryn embodies what it means to be a lifelong CityROCKer: loyal, driven, and always striving to be better every day.

We believe that hard work, dedication, and commitment don’t go unnoticed. Cally and Tarryn’s share awards show that going above and beyond is recognised, and for those who keep pushing, contributing, and showing passion, you could be next.
